Iranian actress who condemned protest crackdown jailed

In January, Iranian authorities harshly suppressed nationwide protests that began against inflation and rising daily living costs.
Human rights organisations estimate that tens of thousands of people were killed during the protests. The Iranian government has acknowledged more than 3,000 deaths. It maintains that they resulted from the actions of protesters and from the alleged planning of the United States and Israel.
According to a British broadcaster, Elnaz Shakerdoust has acted in dozens of films during a screen career spanning two decades. In February, she said she would never act in Iran again after thousands of people were killed in the government’s crackdown on the nationwide protests.
According to HRANA, the US-based human rights activists’ news agency, and the independent media outlet Amtedad, an appeal against the actress’s sentence has also been rejected. The report was made after speaking to the actress’s lawyer.
