WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being renamed, and has urged that it be called Super Intelligence (SI).

According to a foreign news agency, the US president said in a statement on the Social Media platform Truth Social that the use of the term “artificial intelligence” in official documents and other related material would soon be banned.

He said the current name of Artificial Intelligence was wrong and unsuitable, so it should be called Super Intelligence. He also urged the US newspaper The Wall Street Journal to use the new term.

According to the report, Trump also stressed the term Super Intelligence last month at the White House, in a meeting with key figures from the Technology sector, including Elon Musk.

The US president signed an executive order on 29 September, directing federal agencies to use the term Super Intelligence. However, media organisations and most people in the world of Technology are still using the common term AI for Artificial Intelligence.

The report said it is not easy for the president to make the new term compulsory for the general public and the private media, because his powers are limited.

Earlier, the White House had barred the Associated Press from presidential coverage for not writing “Gulf of America” in place of Gulf of Mexico. The news agency filed a case against the decision. A federal judge initially ruled that the White House action was likely to violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution. An appeal against the ruling is pending.

It may be noted that, with the growing use of Artificial Intelligence, public concerns about its possible effects, data centres and the Technology sector are also being discussed.
