LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has issued a message on social media after criticism of a viral video concerning Captain (retd) Safdar. The message spoke of the silent struggle of women fighting illnesses such as cancer.

Maryam Nawaz wrote that the silent battles a woman and wife fights behind closed doors are heartbreaking. She said that even when close to breaking, she must find courage. According to her, some battles are fought in silence and some wounds cannot be seen.

The debate began when a Social Media user questioned remarks attributed to Captain (retd) Safdar. The user referred to the family’s personal experience, namely the death of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz from cancer. The discussion later widened to sensitivity towards cancer patients and the difficulties women face during treatment.

Maryam Nawaz’s message was liked by many Social Media users. They described it as solidarity with women who are ill, face discrimination and endure emotional strain.

For women, cancer is not only a medical problem. It can also bring financial difficulties, strained relationships, social pressure and a feeling of loneliness. Hair loss, physical weakness and the demands of chemotherapy add to the emotional burden, especially when the patient does not have the support of her family.

Some women who related to the message said that, while undergoing treatment, they kept trying to spare their families from worry.
