TEHRAN: A senior Iranian official has said Iran will not accept excessive demands from the United States and is still far from reaching an agreement to end the war.

Speaking to the foreign news agency Reuters, the official said that if the United States wanted the Strait of Hormuz reopened, it would have to meet Iran’s conditions. Nuclear talks could begin after that.

He said mediators were making strong efforts to narrow the differences between Iran and the United States. However, Iran was ready to respond forcefully, in the region and beyond, if the United States attacked.

According to the Iranian official, Iran’s response would not remain limited to the region. Its consequences would also be felt beyond the region.
