LISBON: The Portuguese Football Federation has banned Cristiano Ronaldo for 30 days.

According to foreign media reports, Ronaldo left the national team camp after a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team.

The federation’s disciplinary council upheld in full the charge against the 41-year-old forward. It also fined him €255 ($285.83).

Background to leaving the camp

This month, Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen before the Nations League match against Denmark. Earlier, he had been named among the substitutes in the match against Norway, but he did not get a chance to play.

Ronaldo had alleged that coach Jorge Jesus twice failed to keep his promise regarding his role in the team.

Jorge Jesus denied that there was any agreement with Ronaldo. However, after Portugal’s 2-1 win, he did not rule out Ronaldo’s return.

Details of the disciplinary action

According to the non-professional affairs section of the federation’s disciplinary council, Ronaldo deliberately committed an offence under Article 160 of the federation’s disciplinary regulations.

Proceedings in the case began on 9 October, two days after the report of the incidents concerned was filed.

The federation’s statement did not make clear which matches or activities the ban would apply to, or whether time already served under a provisional suspension would count towards the 30-day penalty.

Ronaldo later apologised for not acknowledging the fans after the match against Norway and for leaving his teammates behind. He said he would be available for the national team after serving the punishment he received over the incident.

Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença has said that, once the matter is resolved, everyone at the federation wants Ronaldo back in the national team.
