PDMA Balochistan launches framework to protect against gender-based violence in emergencies

QUETTA: A ceremony to launch the Balochistan Framework on Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies was held at the conference hall of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan in Quetta.
PDMA Balochistan Director Naveed Ahmed Shaikh chaired the ceremony. Representatives and experts from relevant government departments, the United Nations agency UNFPA, Australian Aid and other partner organisations attended.
The main aim of the event is to develop an effective system and a coordinated strategy to protect affected people, including women and girls, from gender-based violence during natural disasters, emergencies and other crises.
Held under the title “From Preparedness to Protection — Together for a Safer, More Resilient Balochistan”, the ceremony pledged that, alongside dealing with emergencies in Balochistan, the protection of affected populations would be ensured. In particular, the rights and safety of women and vulnerable groups would be safeguarded.
The speakers said the risks faced by women and other vulnerable groups increase during disasters and emergencies. They said advance preparation, timely protection, coordination among institutions and an effective relief system were therefore essential. The ceremony described the GBViE framework for Balochistan as an important step and stressed its effective implementation.
