ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Power Division Awais Leghari has said that the Electronic Power Monitoring System (EPMS) is being installed to shut down transformers in areas where electricity is stolen.

Speaking during a visit to the expansion project of Dera Ghazi Khan Airport, he said the airport was being upgraded for international flights. The project will be completed in January 2028 at a cost of Rs5.5 billion.

He said work was under way on four major development projects announced by the prime minister in Dera Ghazi Khan. They include a cancer hospital, sewerage and road widening projects.

Load shedding and electricity theft

Awais Leghari said load shedding was being carried out across the country according to a set plan. Load shedding will continue on feeders with line losses of 30 per cent or more. Consumers have been protected from heavy bills, but no relief will be given to those who steal electricity and do not pay their bills.

He said gas shortages caused by the Iran-US war were making power generation more expensive. The relevant transformers will be shut down through the Electronic Power Monitoring System. According to him, with the introduction of EPMS, other consumers on a feeder in areas of electricity theft will not be affected.
