JACOBABAD: Children, the elderly and other residents have fallen ill with malaria, a potentially fatal disease, because of the large number of mosquitoes in the city. Public and private hospitals have seen a growing rush of patients.

According to details, poor sanitation, filth in streets and neighbourhoods and the absence of anti-mosquito spraying have led to an increase in mosquito breeding in the city.

Residents say it is proving difficult to stop mosquito breeding because there are no effective cleaning arrangements in various areas, streets and neighbourhoods, and at sewage drainage points.

Residents’ demands

Residents have demanded that the authorities concerned immediately arrange anti-mosquito spraying across the city, ensure the cleaning of streets and neighbourhoods, improve the sewage drainage system and take emergency measures to end mosquito breeding.

They also demanded an awareness campaign on protection against malaria and that the availability of essential medicines and diagnostic facilities for patients in public hospitals be ensured.
