LOS ANGELES: The number of people infected with measles in the United States has crossed 4,400, while the outbreak in the state of Pennsylvania has become more serious.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 4,410 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the country. This is almost double the total of 2,289 cases reported in 2025. It suggests that the number of cases this year could be the highest since 1991.

CDC figures

According to the CDC, 4,392 of these cases were reported from 47 different jurisdictions, while 18 cases were found among international visitors to the US.

The largest number of those infected are children and young people aged between 5 and 19. They account for 1,856 cases, or 42 per cent of the total.

A total of 451 patients, about 10 per cent of all confirmed cases, had to be admitted to hospital. About 96 per cent of the cases occurred in people who were not vaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown.

Situation in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Department of Health said 1,260 measles cases have been confirmed so far this year in 43 counties of the state. Of these, 238 patients were admitted to hospital and five deaths have been confirmed.

According to the department, 38 new cases were reported in the state over the past few days. The department is also investigating a recent death in Franklin County.

The CDC plans to send one of its scientists to Pennsylvania to help deal with the outbreak. According to a spokesperson, the agency will continue to work closely with Pennsylvania Department of Health officials to provide the expertise and support needed to protect public health.

The CDC has recommended two doses of the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella, which provide the best protection against measles.

The agency said that when more than 95 per cent of people in a community have been vaccinated, community immunity, also known as herd immunity, develops, which helps protect more people from the disease.
