Reopening of Strait of Hormuz depends on deal, says Araghchi

In a statement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had sent a peace proposal to the American side through Qatar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. However, US President Donald Trump has announced that he is rejecting the proposal.

He said Iran was still awaiting Washington’s final position through mediators. Under Iran’s proposal, in the event of an agreement, a seven-day process would be put in place to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and fighting in the region would be halted.

Iranian officials have made it clear that Tehran will not give up its rights over its nuclear programme, including uranium enrichment.
