US Air Force readies KC-46 Pegasus refuelling aircraft in Middle East

WASHINGTON: US Air Force personnel have prepared a KC-46 Pegasus aerial refuelling aircraft for flight at a military base in the Middle East. US Central Command reported the activity in a post on the social media platform X.
However, the statement gave no further details about the specific nature of the mission, the final destination of the flight or the objectives of the operation.
Capability of the aircraft
The KC-46 Pegasus is a modern aerial refuelling aircraft of the US Air Force. It can transfer fuel to other military aircraft in flight. Through this system, fighter jets and other military aircraft can stay in the air longer without landing and can carry out operations over long distances.
This capability is particularly important for US air operations because it extends the operational range of aircraft. It can also reduce the need to return repeatedly to military bases during missions in remote areas.
In the context of the US military presence in the Middle East, the aerial refuelling system plays an important role in long-range flights, surveillance and possible military operations. However, the preparation of the KC-46 does not in itself confirm the start of any specific attack or military operation. The available statement from US Central Command also does not make clear which mission the aircraft will take part in.
Instructions on Saudi Arabia
Meanwhile, the United States and Britain have advised their citizens against travelling to Saudi Arabia. They have instructed them not to use Saudi airspace, whichever country they are in and wherever they are going. The instruction did not say that the restriction was due to continuing attacks by the Houthis.
These instructions are also being seen in the context of the preparation of the US refuelling aircraft for the Middle East.
