Egypt’s President Sisi says he will leave office in 2030, rejects talk of constitutional change

CAIRO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has announced clearly that he will leave office in 2030, when his current term ends, and that no amendment will be made to the constitution.
President Sisi, 71, said: “I have already said that the Egyptian constitution will not be touched. The period until 2030, if I am alive, will be my last term as president. This matter is fully settled and there will be no more debate on it.”
Preparing new leadership
Mr Sisi announced that a new generation would be prepared to lead the country by 2030. For this purpose, a special 30-month leadership programme will be launched at the Military Academy.
According to him, the programme will be for PhD holders and capable people from universities at home and abroad. They will be trained in matters of the state, resources and governance.
He said: “I will not leave the Egyptian state until it is filled with sons and daughters able to take on this responsibility.”
A committee will be formed for the plan under the chairmanship of the Speaker of Parliament. It will include intellectuals, politicians, the Minister for Higher Education and the Minister for Justice.
