DOHA: Qatar has called on Iran to stop irresponsible attacks in the Strait of Hormuz at once and to ensure the freedom of global shipping. It said the only solution to the crisis between the United States and Iran is talks and peaceful diplomacy.

Ibrahim bin Sultan al-Hashmi, Director of the Communications Department at Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, said an early peaceful resolution of the crisis was in the interest of all countries in the region, because the effects of the tensions would not remain confined to one country.

He stressed that Iran should respect the freedom of maritime navigation under international law and open the Strait of Hormuz to international traffic. Attacks and obstruction in this important waterway were harming the interests of the whole region and its people.

The Qatari official warned that the effects of internet shutdowns in the region would also be felt by all countries, and that Iran itself would be badly affected.

He said that finding a peaceful solution at the negotiating table was the only way to maintain the region’s security and stability. Qatar supports diplomatic efforts for talks between the United States and Iran, so that the concerns of both sides can be addressed and a lasting solution to the crisis found.

Qatar has earlier also stressed that the Strait of Hormuz should be opened unconditionally and that the freedom of sea routes should be maintained. The passage is extremely important for the global supply of oil and gas.
