China opposes US sanctions on Iran, vows steps to protect its interests

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said during a press briefing that China had made it clear several times that it strongly opposed illegal unilateral sanctions. He said China would take all necessary steps to protect its rights and interests.

China is Iran’s largest trading partner. United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described the new sanctions imposed on Iran as the largest financial action in history.

The US Treasury Secretary called the move against Iran an “economic D-Day”. He said the United States would cut all economic ties with Iran.

He warned that countries with financial partnerships with Iran would also be isolated from the global economic system.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said China had always opposed illegal unilateral sanctions. It said sanctions could not help to solve problems. Economic war and pressure could further fuel disputes, it said. Unilateral sanctions damage the global economic and financial system, it added.
