UN mission report holds US military responsible for Minab school attack in Iran

A new report says the mission examined US military action in Iran during the war that began in February. It also examined the Iranian government’s response to the nationwide unrest that began in late December last year.
The report said US forces were responsible for the attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in the city of Minab. According to Iranian officials, more than 150 people, including 120 children, were killed in the attack.
According to the mission, civilians were killed and civilian infrastructure was damaged in the attack. It said this amounted to a violation of international humanitarian law.
The report said the school was located near a compound of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, it said the US military’s failure to update its targeting data on the school, and to verify before the attack whether the building was a military target, amounted to more than mere negligence.
According to the UN experts, the school was a clearly identifiable civilian building. They said they found no evidence that it had ever been used for military purposes.
The report also mentions an attack on a sports centre in Lamerd. According to the mission, nearby residential buildings and a school were badly damaged, and 22 civilians were killed or injured. The report describes the attack as a war crime.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command had claimed in March that US forces did not carry out any attack on the city of Lamerd that day.
The fact-finding mission also said in its report that the Iranian government committed crimes against humanity during a deadly crackdown to suppress anti-government protests. The UN mission’s mandate is to document and investigate alleged human rights violations in Iran.
