Teeth grow above 16-year-old boy’s eye in India, removed by surgeons

NEW DELHI: A rare case has come to light in India in which teeth grew above the left eye of a 16-year-old boy. Medical experts have described it as the first known case of its kind.
According to Indian media, the boy came to hospital complaining of painless swelling above his left eye. After some time, two hard, white points appeared through the skin between his eyebrow and eyelid.
Doctors confirmed through an examination and a CT scan that there were complete teeth in the upper part of his eye socket.
What is an ectopic tooth
In medical terms, this unusual condition is called an ectopic tooth, in which teeth develop in another part of the body instead of the mouth. Teeth have previously been found in parts of the nose and in the palate (the roof of the mouth). However, this is the first case reported anywhere in the world of teeth found in the eye socket.
According to Indian doctors, there was no history of facial injury or genetic disease in the boy. The scan also showed no extra tooth in any other part of the skull.
Indian media say experts are still trying to find the cause of this unusual condition.
Doctors have successfully removed the teeth through surgery. This has ended the swelling and reduced the risk of future complications.
