PM Shehbaz sets proposed wheat price at Rs4,500 per maund for 2027

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has set the proposed wheat price for 2027 at Rs4,500 per maund, in a step to support farmers.

The price has been raised by Rs1,000 per maund from last year in view of the increase in the cost of production. Last year, the wheat price was fixed at Rs3,500 per maund.

According to a statement issued, the decision was taken under the guidance of President Asif Ali Zardari and Quaid Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, and with the consultation and cooperation of the chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh.

The prime minister offered special thanks to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her cooperation and valuable suggestions during the consultation, and praised her role in the process. He also thanked Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for his cooperation.

According to the prime minister, the aim of the step is to give farmers relief from rising production costs, higher petrol prices and the pressure of inflation. Giving farmers an effective incentive to grow wheat is among the foremost objectives of the decision.

Shehbaz Sharif said the new proposed price is expected to help farmers meet their production costs and earn a reasonable profit.

He said that in past years farmers faced financial difficulties because of inflation and rising agricultural expenses, while Pakistan also had to import wheat in the last two years.

According to the prime minister, the key decision to raise the proposed wheat price will prove an important development for strengthening the country’s food security, encouraging local production and bringing stability to the agricultural sector.

The government expects that with the proposed price in place, growers will take greater interest in sowing wheat. This will brighten the prospects of heavy sowing and higher domestic production in the coming season.

The prime minister said the step would prove an important milestone in efforts to improve farmers’ economic condition, stabilise the agricultural economy and make the country more self-sufficient in its food needs. The year 2027 is expected to bring positive results for Pakistan’s agricultural sector and the prosperity of farmers.
