The assistant commissioner inspected vegetable and fruit shops, butchers’ shops and general stores. He checked the official rate lists displayed by shopkeepers. He directed all shopkeepers to display the updated price lists issued by the administration in prominent places. He made it clear that no shopkeeper would be allowed to charge arbitrary prices, create artificial inflation or hoard goods.

Emphasis on removing encroachments and cleanliness

Taking strict notice of illegal encroachments on roads and footpaths, the assistant commissioner directed shopkeepers to stay within their limits so that pedestrians and traffic were not obstructed. He warned them to clear roads and footpaths immediately. He also directed them to maintain the quality of food items and cleanliness in their shops.

Speaking to the traders’ community, Assistant Commissioner Khost said the district administration’s aim was not to harass traders but to ensure the supply of quality goods to the public at fair prices. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against profiteers and those who set up encroachments. He said such surprise visits would continue regularly in future.
