SHANGHAI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah met senior officials of Shanghai Electric Group. The meeting discussed cooperation and investment prospects in renewable energy, power infrastructure, water and environmental technologies.

The Sindh Chief Minister invited Shanghai Electric to expand cooperation in the province and identify projects suitable for investment.

Syed Murad Ali Shah said Sindh offered wide investment opportunities in solar and wind energy. He said the Sindh government would welcome Chinese expertise and investment in clean energy projects.

He said the Sindh government wanted Chinese investment in renewable energy. It wished to link Chinese technology, investment and engineering expertise with the province’s natural resources.

Briefing by the company

The Shanghai Electric delegation briefed the Sindh Chief Minister on the group’s business sectors and international operations. According to the delegation, the company works in power, renewable energy, environmental protection, industrial equipment, power transmission and distribution, and engineering services.

The company also has expertise in solar, wind, hydrogen and energy storage technologies. It has wide experience in completing large-scale energy and infrastructure projects.

Interest in desalination

The Sindh Chief Minister expressed particular interest in Shanghai Electric’s desalination technology. The delegation said the company had a large hybrid desalination project in Hebei. It includes a reverse osmosis system treating 75,000 tonnes of water a day and an MED plant with a capacity of 25,000 tonnes a day.

Syed Murad Ali Shah said Karachi, Sindh’s coastal city, and other water-scarce areas could benefit from desalination technology. He said Sindh’s long coastline offered an important opportunity to provide alternative sources of water. He also invited Shanghai Electric to introduce modern desalination solutions in the province.

The Sindh Chief Minister said the province had significant solar and wind energy potential and Chinese companies could play an important role in promoting renewable energy. He said Sindh was also interested in modern energy storage solutions and technologies. He added that modern transmission and distribution systems could make the province’s energy system more efficient.

He said there were opportunities in Sindh for energy projects under public-private partnership. He said reliable energy and water infrastructure were essential for industrial development. For this reason, the Sindh government was improving energy and water infrastructure to promote new industries and investment.

Syed Murad Ali Shah said clean energy, desalination and modern technology could help sustainable development. Stressing continued contact between Shanghai Electric and the Sindh government, he said the provincial government would provide every possible facility to Chinese companies to set up projects in Sindh.
