PP-203 Chichawatni: PML-N’s Asad Hanif Wins; Rashid Bashir Warraich Leads in NA-77

CHICHAWATNI: Muhammad Asad Hanif of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) has won the by-election for Punjab Assembly constituency PP-203 Sahiwal-6.

By-elections were held for National Assembly constituency NA-77 Gujranwala-1 and Punjab Assembly constituency PP-203 Chichawatni. Voting continued from 8am to 5pm.

According to unofficial and non-final results, PML-N’s Muhammad Asad Hanif won in PP-203 Chichawatni with 41,605 votes. Muhammad Awais Mehmood of the Tehreek-e-Ehsaas Pakistan secured second place with 25,027 votes. After the PML-N candidate’s victory, supporters celebrated at his residence and distributed sweets.

Counting continues in NA-77

Meanwhile, vote counting is under way for the NA-77 Gujranwala-1 by-election. Of the 333 polling stations, unofficial and non-final results from 120 show PML-N’s Rashid Bashir Warraich ahead with 20,153 votes, while Muhammad Ibrahim of the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League is second with 16,478 votes.

The NA-77 seat fell vacant following the death of PML-N MNA Mahmood Bashir Warraich, while the PP-203 Chichawatni seat became vacant following the death of PML-N’s Hanif Jatt.

A total of 11 candidates are contesting the NA-77 by-election. Prominent among them are Rashid Bashir Warraich of PML-N, Qazi Ibrahim Gujjar of the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League, and independent candidate Ulfat Rasool Warraich. The Pakistan Peoples Party did not field a candidate in this constituency, while PTI has boycotted the election.
