Lev Yashin was a Soviet Union goalkeeper who played for a single Moscow club, Dynamo Moscow, for 20 years. He is still the only goalkeeper to have won the Ballon d'Or, awarded to Europe’s best player. Because he wore dark clothes from head to toe, he came to be called the “Black Spider”. He is best known for no longer leaving the goalkeeper as a player who merely stood on the goal line. He made him the leader of the whole defensive line3.

Early life and beginnings

Yashin was born in Moscow on 22 October 1929. During the Second World War, at the age of 12, he began working in a factory. His play for the factory team led to a call-up to the Dynamo Moscow youth team. According to Transfermarkt’s records, his first official match for Dynamo was on 1 July 19501. In 1950 he got only two league matches, and until 1953 he stayed in the reserve team3.

Club career

Yashin spent his entire professional career with Dynamo Moscow, from 1950 to 19703. Transfermarkt’s match-by-match record lists 358 official matches for him in that period. They include Soviet league matches, league championship round matches and Soviet Cup matches. His last official match is recorded on 30 August 19701.

During this time Dynamo won the Soviet league five times, in 1954, 1955, 1957, 1959 and 1963, and the Soviet Cup three times3.

At the end of his career, a farewell match was held for him at the Lenin Stadium in Moscow. Many of the world’s top players took part3. According to FIFA, Yashin also invited Uruguay goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz to the match. At the end he gave him his gloves and said he was his true successor. FIFA says no goalkeeper of that era could have received greater praise4.

International career

Yashin was called up to the Soviet national team in 19543. According to Transfermarkt’s records, his first international match was on 8 September 1954 and his last on 15 July 1967. He played 74 matches in that time. They include 13 World Cup matches2.

With the national team he won the football gold medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. The first European Championship, in 1960, was also won by the Soviet Union3.

He played in three World Cups: Sweden 1958, Chile 1962 and England 1966. The 1958 World Cup, the first to be shown on television internationally, introduced Yashin to the world. In a group match against Brazil the Soviet Union lost 2-0, but his saves kept the score from rising. In 1962 the team reached the quarter-finals. In 1966 the Soviet Union achieved their best World Cup result, finishing fourth. Portugal beat the Soviet Union in the third-place match5. At the 1970 World Cup he was in the squad as the third goalkeeper but did not play a match3.

Style of play

Yashin was a tall goalkeeper. Transfermarkt lists his height as 1.89 metres1. With his agility, good positioning and quick reactions, he made saves that spectators remembered for years3.

His real strength was that he was not tied to the goal line. Unlike ordinary goalkeepers of the time, Yashin shouted instructions to his defenders. He came out to catch crosses and rushed out of the box to stop fast-approaching attackers3.

After his saves for the Rest of the World against England in 1963, it was said that the Black Spider seemed to have eight hands. He won the Ballon d'Or that same year3.

Legacy

Yashin gave goalkeeping a new idea: the goalkeeper is not just a man who saves goals but also an organiser of the defence. The style later goalkeepers adopted of catching crosses and playing outside the box was first seen in his play. A bronze statue of him stands at Dynamo Stadium in Moscow. Since 2019, France Football has presented the best goalkeeper each year with the Yashin Trophy, named after him. After leaving the game he held administrative posts at Dynamo Moscow for about 20 years. He died on 20 March 199013.
