Marco van Basten was a Dutch centre-forward who won almost every major European honour in a top-level career of about 11 years. He made the Netherlands European champions in 1988, won the European Cup twice with AC Milan, and won the Ballon d'Or three times4. A recurring ankle injury forced him to play his last match at the age of 28. In FIFA’s words, his career was "ruthlessly cut short by injury"3.

Early life and beginnings

Van Basten was born on 31 October 1964 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He began playing football with local clubs in Utrecht1. Ajax signed him in 1981, when he was 164.

On 3 April 1982 he played his first match for Ajax. He came on as a substitute for Johan Cruyff and scored in a 5-0 win over NEC4. In 1983 he was part of the Netherlands Under-20 team at the FIFA World Youth Championship in Mexico13.

Club career

At Ajax he was the Dutch league’s top scorer for four consecutive seasons, from 1983–84 to 1986–87. In 1985–86 he scored 37 goals in 26 league matches and won the "Golden Shoe" as Europe’s top scorer. In 1987 he scored the decisive goal in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final against Lokomotive Leipzig4.

In 1987 he joined AC Milan with his fellow Dutchman Ruud Gullit. An ankle injury limited him to 11 matches in his first season, but Milan won the Italian league. In the 1989 European Cup final he scored twice against Steaua Bucharest. In the 1990 final against Benfica he set up Frank Rijkaard’s winning goal. Milan thus won the European Cup in two successive years4.

In 1991–92 Milan won the Italian league without losing a match all season, and Van Basten was the league’s top scorer with 25 goals. In 1992 he was named FIFA World Player of the Year4.

In the same season his old ankle injury returned. The Champions League final against Marseille in May 1993 proved to be his last match1. After two years of treatment and operations, he announced his retirement on 17 August 19954.

International career

Van Basten made his debut for the Netherlands on 7 September 1983 in a European Championship qualifier against Iceland4. According to Transfermarkt, he scored 24 goals in 58 matches up to 19922.

The 1988 European Championship in West Germany defined his career. He scored five goals: a hat-trick against England, the winner against hosts West Germany in the semi-final, and, in the final against the Soviet Union in Munich, a volley from a tight angle on the right, considered one of the most famous goals in the tournament’s history. The Netherlands won 2-0 to become European champions for the first time, and Van Basten was named top scorer and player of the tournament4.

At the 1990 World Cup the Netherlands went out in the second round, and Van Basten never scored at a World Cup. In the semi-final of the 1992 European Championship, his penalty was saved in the shoot-out against Denmark4.

Style of play

Van Basten was a tall centre-forward, yet his ball control, balance and finesse were those of a smaller technical player. He was especially skilled at scoring with his head, volleys and overhead kicks. He was also adept at dropping back to create attacks and set up chances for team-mates. The debate over hard tackles from behind on him also affected the laws of the game. According to Wikipedia, FIFA banned tackles from behind completely in 1998, which the media called the "Van Basten law"4.

Legacy

Van Basten is remembered with the question of how far he might have gone had he not been injured. According to FIFA, in 2022 his former team-mate Carlo Ancelotti used him as the yardstick to praise a current striker3. In 2004 Pelé included him in the FIFA 100 list. He later also coached Ajax and the Netherlands national team4.
