Kenny Dalglish: Celtic and Liverpool’s goal-scoring forward
Scotland forward Kenny Dalglish won the league with Celtic and Liverpool, three European Cups and six English titles, and holds Scotland's appearance record.

Kenny Dalglish was a Scotland forward who won the league in both Scotland and England, first with Glasgow’s Celtic and then with England’s Liverpool. With Liverpool he won three European Cups and six English league titles, and scored the only goal of the 1978 European Cup final34. His 102 matches for Scotland remain the country’s record, and his 30 goals, level with Denis Law, are the most for Scotland56.
Early life and beginnings
Dalglish was born in Glasgow on 4 March 1951. According to the Scottish FA, Celtic signed him in 1967 and initially sent him on loan to local club Cumbernauld United for experience, where he scored freely5. His first official match for Celtic was a League Cup tie against Hamilton Academical on 25 September 1968, which Celtic won 4-21.
Club career
In the early 1970s Dalglish became a regular in Celtic’s first team. In that period Celtic won the Scottish league in 1972, 1973 and 1974, and again became champions in 19772. He played 338 matches for Celtic in all competitions and scored 173 goals, including 111 goals in 204 league matches. His last match for Celtic was against Motherwell on 10 May 19771.
On 10 August 1977 Liverpool bought him for £440,000. Liverpool were the European champions at the time4. Dalglish played his first match on 13 August 1977 against Manchester United in the Charity Shield and scored his first goal on 20 August3.
His first season proved memorable. On 10 May 1978, in the European Cup final at Wembley Stadium in London, Liverpool played Belgium’s Club Brugge. From a pass by Graeme Souness, Dalglish lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to score, and it was the only goal of the match. Liverpool won the European Cup for a second year running34.
In the following years Liverpool dominated English football. With Dalglish, the club won the league in 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1986, two more European Cups in 1981 and 1984, and four successive League Cups from 1981 to 1984. In 1979 and 1983 football writers named him Footballer of the Year, and in 1983 he also won the award of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA)3. That year he finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting7.
In the 1985–86 season Liverpool completed the “double” by winning both the league and the FA Cup. His last goal came in April 1987 and his last match was on 1 May 1990. For Liverpool he scored 172 goals in 515 matches and provided 171 assists3.
International career
According to the Scottish Football Association, Dalglish played his first match on 10 November 1971 against Belgium in a European Championship qualifier at Pittodrie Stadium in Aberdeen. He played at three World Cups, in 1974, 1978 and 1982, and with 102 matches is Scotland’s most capped player. His 30 international goals equal Denis Law’s, and the two jointly top Scotland’s scoring list5. RSSSF’s list of October 2026 also shows both records in his name6.
Style of play
Dalglish was less a traditional centre-forward than a forward who dropped back a little to build play. He shielded the ball with his body, turned to pass and scored himself. The figures bear out this dual role: 172 goals for Liverpool along with 171 assists. His goal in the 1978 final, when he waited for the goalkeeper to advance and chipped the ball over him, is regarded as an example of his composure3.
