Franco Baresi spent his entire 20-year career at one club, AC Milan, and captained it for 15 seasons. He was a “libero”, a free defender behind the back line, who started attacks from the back as well as winning the ball. With Milan he won six Italian league titles and three European Cups. In 1989 he finished second in the Ballon d’Or as a defender. He died on 31 July 2026 at the age of 6612.

Early life and beginnings

Baresi was born in Italy on 8 May 19604. He joined Milan’s first team in 1977 and wore no other club’s shirt until 199713.

The early part of his career was not easy. At the start of the 1980s Milan dropped twice into the second-tier Serie B. Baresi stayed with the club and helped bring the team back to Serie A both times2.

Club career

According to Reuters, the defensive line of Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti perfected the high line and the “offside trap”. All the defenders moved forward together to catch the opposing forward offside. With this defence, Fabio Capello’s side later went 58 Serie A matches unbeaten and became known as “the Invincibles” (Gli Invincibili)2.

Milan won the European Cup (now the Champions League) in 1989, 1990 and 1994. In the 1989 Ballon d’Or, Baresi finished second to his teammate Marco van Basten, which was unusual for a defender13.

Baresi scored 33 goals in 719 matches for Milan1. When he retired in 1997, the club retired his number 6 shirt. According to Reuters, he was the first player in Milan’s history to receive this honour2. According to AFP, Milan later named him the club’s player of the century3.

International career

Baresi, then 22, was in the Italy squad that won the 1982 World Cup, but he did not get to play a single minute4. According to RSSSF, his first match for Italy was on 4 December 19825. He did not play at the 1986 World Cup3.

The 1990 World Cup was held in Italy, and Baresi played all seven matches. According to FIFA, Italy did not concede for 518 minutes up to the semi-final. The team conceded only two goals in the whole tournament4. In the semi-final Argentina beat Italy on penalties, and Italy finished third6.

At the 1994 World Cup he was Italy’s captain. In the second match, against Norway, he had to leave the pitch with a knee injury. He had an operation on 25 June and was fit to play again before the team reached the final. In the final against Brazil in Pasadena on 17 July, he played the full 120 minutes24. According to the BBC, he largely nullified Brazil’s Romario and Bebeto. The match ended 0-0. In the shoot-out Baresi took Italy’s first kick and missed, and Brazil won 3-217.

In a 2020 interview with FIFA, Baresi said he had considered it his last World Cup, so the injury was a “huge blow”4. According to AFP, speaking of finishing first, second and third in three World Cups, he said it was “not bad at all, I can’t complain”3. His last international match was on 7 September 19945.

Style of play

According to Reuters, Baresi gave the role of sweeper (libero) a new meaning. Alongside defensive strength, he also began attacks from the back2. In his conversation with FIFA, Baresi himself said that real football fans know how important defenders are4. According to AFP, his teammate Van Basten called him the “Johan Cruyff of defenders”. He also said Baresi was quiet and shy off the pitch but a fighter on it3.
